Canadian Government Bans Lead Wheel Weights

Mar 27, 2023 | Technical, Tire Balancing

The Government of Canada passed legislation to prohibit the sale, manufacture and importation of wheel weights containing more than 0.1% of lead.

There will be a transition period of 12 months before the regulations come into force on February 3, 2024. After the enforcement date, pre-existing inventories can still be sold and installed on vehicles within Canada.

The question is, will pressure from environmentalists further influence current practices and future regulations leaving companies holding massive amounts of this toxic inventory?

Other metals used in the manufacturing of wheel weights all have major disadvantages over lead; they are less dense which impacts size and malleability and make it harder to produce tight weight tolerances, and some are currently under review for environmental impact.

Don’t overstock on a potential excess inventory of wheel weights. Now is the time to make the switch to Counteract Balancing Beads. Made from 99.9% recycled material, environmentally friendly, a better overall balance of the complete wheel assembly and proven to save on fuel.
